Ninety Minutes to Bid: Working a BWIC List When Four Others Are Running

A BWIC hits at 9:00am with bids due at 10:30am. Ninety minutes to decide what to bid. 

The first pass is triage. Which lines are worth your time, which you would never touch, which you need to see a level on before you can say. Then the real work on the ones that survive. Check what you own and what you have already seen. Find where comparable paper has been quoted, which on a mezz CLO tranche can mean a handful of prints and a lot of judgment. Look at who holds it and how deep the buyer base runs. Pull dealer inventory to see what is already on the street. Build a level, and decide whether you actually want the bond. 

Do that for one list and it is a focused hour. Do it for five lists with deadlines stacked through the morning and the triage becomes the job. You are not short of analysis. You’re short on time to get to it.

Where the work happens

Most of the friction is not analytical. It is the cost of assembling the picture. Quote history in one place, holders in another, dealer inventory in a third, a cashflow model in a fourth, and a spreadsheet holding the whole thing together.

It is 9:40am and there are eleven BWICs on the screen. Two of them are yours. 

Pin and hide. 

Pin the lists you are working and they hold at the top, sorting themselves by earliest due time, so the next deadline is always the first thing you see. Hide the ones that are not yours and the monitor collapses to what you are actually bidding. Both are user specific, and both carry over between sessions. As you go, you can drop a note on a line, the level you are leaning toward, the thing you want to check before you commit, so your thinking stays on the security instead of in your head.

It is 10:05am and the same list is up on three screens down the desk. 

Status on the line. 
 
Set a status on any security, Pass, Bid, Won, or Lost, and the rest of the desk sees it, with who set it on hover. The bond you are about to spend ten minutes on may already be passed. Two of you may be pricing the same line, neither one aware. The coordination that used to happen by calling it across the desk now sits on the security itself. 

It is 10:15am and the list is not the list you started with.

What changes on a live BWIC 

A BWIC is not a fixed document. The seller can revise it right up to the deadline. Sizes get revised. Securities are added or pulled. Due times move. 

Alerts tell you when a list arrives, or when a name you care about turns up on one. A revision to a list you already have is a different problem, because the updated version looks almost exactly like the original. 

Size. 
A line moves from 5MM to 15MM and the bond you passed over as a small add is worth a second look, or the one you already priced now needs a different level. Either way, the list you triaged at 9:15am is not the one in front of you now. 

Securities added or removed. 

A name comes off the list after you have built a level for it, and that time is gone. A name gets added late, and it may be the one you actually wanted. 

Due time. 

The window you are working against is the assumption underneath every other decision in the hour. If it moves and you do not know, everything downstream is timed to the wrong deadline. 

The CHG column 

A change column in the BWIC Monitor carries two tags: New for a recent addition, Upd for a revision. Both work at the BWIC level and at the individual security level, so a whole new list arriving reads differently from a single line being revised inside a list you are already working.

You set what counts as recent. Change Based On takes either a rolling time window or everything since your last refresh, which is the one you want if you work in blocks and step away between lists. 

The column filters like any other column, so the monitor collapses to only what has moved. On a screen carrying several hundred lines across a dozen lists, that is the difference between scanning and reading. 

The tag tells you something changed. Hovering tells you what. Size revisions, due time changes, and security adds and removals surface directly. A due time moving from 10:30 to 11:00 with two securities resized is one hover, not a second pass through the list.

Setting it up

Add the CHG column to your BWIC Monitor view and set Change Based On. Pin the lists you are working, and note your thinking on the lines as you go. Keep a filtered view available for the moments when you only want to see what moved. Before you bid, check the notes you left earlier, so an hour-old view gets a second look before it becomes a number. 

Tab arrangement carries over between sessions, so the setup is a one-time exercise.

The point

Bidding a BWIC is a timed exercise with incomplete information, and nearly all of the effort goes into the analysis. What surrounds that effort decides how much of it survives to the deadline. A level built on a size that has since doubled is work that produced nothing. So is a bond you never reached because the screen was full of lists that were not yours. 

None of this changes how you price a bond. It changes how many you get to.
